Vanda metusalae, new Archins form Indonesia
In January 2008 has published a new species of Vanda orchids from Indonesia. This orchid has been described by Peter O'Brien and Jaap Vermeulen in the Journal of The Orchid Review 116 (1279): 9-11 (2008) form the trees are not too large, the stem can reach 50 cm, with 1,2-1,5 cm in diameter. Leaves quite narrow, 2-2,3 cm wide leaves, leaves of 30-45 cm long, pointed two sides (bilobed) and pointed sharp-toothed. The flowering stalk including short when compared with other family Vanda, which is about 5-6 cm, 3-7 to bring the flower bud. Vanda metusalae sized flower is not too large, namely 3.2 cm x 3.5 cm, colored bright yellow with a basic pattern of brownish red spot on the edge sheath (sepal-petal) and form a pattern of lines clockwise longitudinal vessel. In the space labellumnya be split 3 (trilobed), with the end midlobe the wide and wavy edge in the bright yellow base and a brownish tinge towards the end. Vanda has a close kinship with devoogtii Vanda, Vanda merrillii, sumatrana and Vanda Vanda hindsii. Unfortunately, this orchid flower did not last long, beautiful flowers survive only about 7-10 days. Metusalae Vanda orchids, including the level of difficulty of cultivation has a high when compared with other relatives Vanda, vegetative growth is very slow, adaptation ability is low so that new plants are very easy to stress, the growth environment that require very specific humidity, temperature, Aeration, and the intensity light that is really appropriate. If the growth environment is only slightly changed, do not grow, this plant will be stagnant and even many among the dead drought (because there is no optimal root growth) and even many of which have decayed roots because that is too humid conditions. These plants probably are not recommended for beginners.
The urgent priority is to be done is to increase, especially through the culture and seed culture network that is not the species to disappear from their habitat, such as some relatives Vanda species from Indonesia.
